Analyze the role of exercise in the aging process. How important is exercise in late adulthood? What types of exercise might be especially beneficial? What obstacles exist toward getting regular exercise?
What will be an ideal response?
Exercise is most likely more important in later adulthood than earlier in life because
it can improve balance, strength, and flexibility, typical weaknesses in older adults.
Muscle strengthening in particular benefits the cardiovascular, respiratory, and
digestive systems as well as balance. Weight-bearing exercise can slow the
process of osteoporosis and help prevent falls. Obstacles toward getting regular
exercise include self-perception, fear, and community circumstances such as
absence of sidewalks and dangerous street traffic.
