What is identity theft, and how can identities be stolen?

What will be an ideal response?

Identity theft involves the unauthorized use of another individual's personal information to commit fraud. Identities can be stolen in two ways. Existing account fraud involves thieves who acquire information on accounts that are already open (credit, brokerage, banking, utility, etc.). New account fraud occurs when thieves use personal information to open new accounts in the victim's name, make charges indiscriminately, and then disappear.
