A formal region can be defined by some aspect of physical form or cultural feature, such as the Appalachians of the USA or the French-speaking part of Canada. A functional region is where a specific activity (or activities take place, such as the Rustbelt of the Midwest of the USA or the Corn Belt of the central USA.
