Answer: Chaos is a condition that occurs in physical systems that makes it impossible to precisely predict how a system (such as the state of the atmosphere) will appear some time in the future. Chaos arises because small errors in the input value of a variable (or even round-off error) can become magnified in time. This situation is referred to as sensitive dependence on initial conditions. It is a serious problem for weather forecasting because the initial conditions are never known exactly.
