A double-pan balance may be used to promote conceptual understanding of equations. A teacher may place 3 one-ounce weights on one pan (side) and demonstrate that 3 one-ounce weights must be added to the other pan (side) to establish equality between the two sides. The teacher could then add 2 additional one-ounce weights to one side to show inequality between the two sides. In order to balance the two sides, the teacher would add 2 one-ounce weights to the other pan. After the initial demonstration by the teacher, the students may be given the opportunity to manipulate the double-pan balance themselves to solve equations. Electronic versions of balance beams also are available for student practice.
