episodes with fathers tend to have sharper peaks and valleys: high states of excitement and more sudden and complete withdrawals by the baby. Fathers tend to jostle more and talk less than mothers do, and they roughhouse more and play ritual games such as peek-a-boo less. Fathers also devote more time with their babies to play than mothers do. These differences in style also appear in middle childhood, and such playful interactions may help to prepare infants for future play with peers. Several factors explain these differences: past experience with infants, the amount of time routinely spent with young children, difficult work schedules, and fathers’ expectations about the stresses and responsibilities of parenting may all play a role.
