Gareth Morgan (1986) was one of the first scholars to critique Weber’s overemphasis on banishing emotions. Morgan brilliantly depicted how administrative rationality became the dominant managerial paradigm, which he aptly described as an overrationalized view of organizational life. As a result of what Morgan saw as this overrationalized approach, business schools trained future leaders primarily in terms of technical skills, such as accounting and finance. Moreover, organizations tended to devalue jobs that dealt with emotions. Even employees who were supposed to provide emotional support to clients or to other employees were judged more by their performance of routine technical tasks than by the effectiveness of their emotion-related work tasks. For example, nurses and hospice workers might be judged more by the number of technical task they performed (I.V.s given, pills dispensed) than by how well they supported patients’ emotional needs. Likewise, elementary school teachers might be judged on completion of paperwork more than on the degree to which they established a positive relationship with their students.
