We all tend to engage in automatic thinking in our daily lives. It would be disconcerting to continually challenge everything we thought and did. There are times, however, when it is a good idea to challenge our own and others' thoughts and actions. Help students distinguish when they should challenge automatic thinking by demonstrating how it has affected them in the past.

Focus students' thinking on an experience that they had in the past. Have them look back on it to see if they approached the situation differently, would there have been different outcomes. They may want to think of a time when a parent, teacher or friend was able to say, "I told you so…" Why was it that the other person had more insight to the particular situation? Were they better able to see the situation from multiple perspectives while the student was just looking at it from one angle? Did this "I told you so…" experience result from automatic thinking?
