Nation-state identity has superseded other sources as the primary identity in most of the world. Nation-state identity is strongest in modern developed nations. As these groups are more easily surveyed, we have good data on what contact zone threats nation-state groups perceive. A survey found increasing concerns about threats to culture, threats to the environment, and threats posed by immigration. In nearly every country surveyed, people expressed concerns about losing their traditional culture and national identities and felt their way of life needed protection against foreign influences.
