How are cell phone “apps” transforming the telephone industry??

What will be an ideal response?

ANSWER:
The analogy to computer software extends to the many application programs, or apps, that are being developed for smartphones. Smart phones are merging with personal computer technology so that they can run software applications, or "apps" for short, that allow mobile access to the Internet, audio and video files, and to a growing number of location-based services that provide information useful in specific locations. Although the makers of the operating systems make their own apps, the demand for apps has given birth to a cottage industry of more than 100,000 independent developers.
