Women only account for 12% of senior enlisted personnel and officers. The Marine Corps is only about 3% female. The Navy refuses to allow women to serve on submarines. The hypermasculine nature of the military devalues feminine qualities. Women are often subject to undermining and degrading "tests" of their worthiness to serve. They often experience scrutiny and indirect threats, even assault. Female service members are far more often subject to military sexual trauma than men are. In some studies, nearly half of female veterans claimed to have experienced sexual assault while serving, and the vast majority of those cases are either unreported or determined to be unfounded. Women may even face repercussions for reporting an assault while their attacker goes unpunished. Marriages of military women are more likely to fail than those of military men. Menstruation during deployment is also a challenge unique to women. Support systems for women in the military are key, as are sexual assault prevention programs and safe channels for women to report being victimized without fear of consequences.
