Compare the use of glutamate and GABA in ablation studies.
What will be an ideal response?
Glutamate is an excitatory neurotransmitter, whereas GABA is an inhibitory one. Both can be used to study brain regions, but they accomplish this task in different ways. Glutamate can produce an excitotoxic lesion in which cells are overstimulated and damaged. On the other hand, GABA inactivates a region by inhibiting the neurons there. GABA influences can be reversed.
