A researcher is interested in the differences in drug use by gender.Drug use is measured by the number of times a subject has used marijuana or cocaine in the past three months. Which statistical procedure would you apply to determine whether there is a significant difference between male and female drug use?

A. Chi-square
B. t-ratio
C. ANOVA
D. Median test

Answer: Chi square test:
Chi square test is used to determine whether there is a significant difference between expected frequencies and observed frequencies between one or more categories.

T ratio:
t statistic is the ratio of departure of estimated value of a parameter from its hypothesized value to the standard error.

ANOVA:
Analysis of variance is a collection of statistical models and their associated estimated variation used to analyse the differences among group means in a sample.

Median test: (one way ANOVA)
Median test is used for testing whether two groups are differ in their median. In simple, median test focus on whether the two groups come from population with same median. This test stipulates that the measurement scale is atleast ordinal and the samples are independent (no necessity of same sample size).

Hence we use ANOVA statistical test to determine whether there is a significant difference.
