Discuss the major earthquake that occurred in Haiti in 2010, including Haiti's proximity to tectonic plates, the damage, and how the poverty of Haiti worsened the effects of this devastating event.

What will be an ideal response?

The earthquake which struck Haiti in 2010 was devastating for a host of factors. The poor construction of buildings and the lack of access to water and sanitation made for an extremely unsafe environment and made Haiti susceptible to a large loss of life. The lack of a solid road network and transportation facilities further exacerbated the effort to bring in needed medical supplies. A dysfunctional government which was rendered paralyzed on a time of an emergency also contributed to the high death toll.
