They are defined by the federal government in Executive Order 13101 as those that have: "a lesser or reduced effect on human health and the environment when compared to competing products that serve the same purpose." The federal government, in an effort to help federal purchasers and simultaneously stimulate market demand for green products and materials, mandates the use of environmentally preferable products in all new federally financed construction projects.
