Define the term "discretionary kcalories" and provide three examples of foods that provide them. Under what circumstances is the intake of discretionary kcalories permitted?

?Discretionary kcalories are the kcalories remaining in a person's energy allowance after consuming enough nutrient-dense foods to meet all nutrient needs for a day, also referred to as kcalories available for other uses. Discretionary kcalories allow a person to choose whether to eat additional nutrient-dense foods, such as an extra serving of skinless chicken or a second ear of corn; select a few foods with solid fats or added sugars; add a little fat or sugar to foods, such as butter or jelly on toast; or consume a little alcohol. Alternatively, a person wanting to lose weight might choose not to use discretionary kcalories. Discretionary kcalories reflect about 5 to 15 percent of total kcalories.
