How does the purchasing of carbon offsets differ from buying emissions permits from another company, and when might a company find themselves wanting or needing to do each?
What will be an ideal response?
A company purchases emissions permits when they are subject to a
governmentally imposed cap-and-trade system (also called an emissions trading
system). Under this system, each organization is subject to a limit on how much GHG
they can produce. If they go over this amount or expect to, they can purchase extra
limits from a low-carbon company that will meet its obligations with room to spare.
Purchasing carbon offsets is similar in that it involves paying another company for its
low-carbon contribution, but it differs in that it is not related to government regulation. In
this case, any company that wants to contribute to reducing climate change but feels
that it cannot do enough through altering its own processes can pay another company
to reduce emissions on its behalf. Other carbon offsets can include investing in tree
plantings and energy efficiency projects, among others.
