The answers should mention high achievers and gifted students as benefiting the most academically and, in general, that these methods increase the achievement gap with low SES and minority students being disproportionately segregated into lower groups. Benefits include greater engagement in school and more positive attitudes toward subjects. Within-class grouping tends to not affect self-esteem, but between-class grouping shows self-esteem benefits for lower achieving students.
