Explain the significance of merger of offenses and double jeopardy.

What will be an ideal response?

When a person is charged with two crimes based on exactly the same acts, one of which is a lesser included offense of the other, the lesser crime merges. Due to the prohibition against double jeopardy, the person may be tried for only one crime based on exactly the same act(s).
