Apply the structured-question technique to a product such as a coffee machine. List all possible features that you and your team can work on to improve an existing product.

What will be an ideal response?

1. What is wrong with it? Doesn't make coffee fast enough. Coffee is too cold.
2. How can I improve it? Super heat the water, put heated blocks in contact with water and coffee.
3. What other uses does it have in its present form? The coffee maker might be able to make espresso, cappuccino, tea, soup, etc.
4. Can it be modified? It can have big stainless steel heat exchanger to heat the water.
5. Can it be magnified? It can be larger to accommodate the heat exchanger.
6. Can it be “minified”? It could be smaller if it used a smaller heat exchanger.
7. Is there something similar we can adopt? Use an off-the-shelf espresso machine and modify it with new heat exchangers and capabilities.
8.What if we reverse it? Mount it under a cabinet so water and beans are added from the bottom.
9. Can it have a new look? Use new materials to make it unique looking, such as from carbon fiber.
10. Can it be based on an old look? Use copper or brass for an antique look.
11. Can it be rearranged? Put the coffee pot on top and push the water up through the grounds.
12. Can it be substituted? Use different materials to hold brewed coffee such as stainless steel, glass, aluminum, plastic.
13. Can the ideas, principles, methods, groups, components, hardware, or issues be combined? Combine the water heater into the water reservoir so heated water is always ready.
14. Can we simplify? Get rid of the coffee carafe and put a coffee cup under filter to collect coffee.
15. Can it be made safer? Put a sensor under carafe or coffee cup so water does not come out if nothing is there. Put a thermal switch in unit to turn it off if it gets too hot.
