Alcohol abuse increases the risk of accidents and can prevent the drinker from meeting work, school, and family responsibilities. Chronic alcohol abuse can result in malnutrition, liver disease (cirrhosis), nervous system damage, and an increased risk for certain cancers. Excessive alcohol intake can contribute to weight gain and obesity. Drinking when pregnant increases the risk of birth defects, including fetal alcohol syndrome.
