Explain the critique that environmentalism is mainly an “elite issue.” Do you agree or disagree? What evidence would you provide to support your argument?

What will be an ideal response?

The idea of social movements as elite comes from Thoreau
conceptualizations of the environment where it was a wilderness separate from
everyday life that must be protected and isolated. Conversely, broader social
movements about environmental problems today are about our everyday
environments, and the justice of pollution in our everyday places. Although the
themes of movements may have changed from an elite notion of a reserved
wilderness to environmental justice issues, the statistics have never supported
that the elite are more concerned about the environment. In fact, it is the
opposite today. More women and people of color are very concerned about the
environment in surveys and white males who make over $75,000 annually are
the least likely to be concerned about the environment.
