What are some suggestions you can make to help R.T. successfully complete the bowel

preparation?

What will be an ideal response?

• Following the clear liquid diet will help make it easier to empty the bowels.
• Some find that the mixture tastes best ice cold. One way to cool it quickly is to put it in the sink
with ice all around it.
• He may want to drink the mixture through a straw so the taste goes as far back in the mouth as
possible. Drink it as fast as he can.
• As soon as he finishes a dose, he can follow up with something strong tasting, such as his favorite
flavored chewing gum or hard candy, to get the taste out of his mouth.
• Make sure he drinks plenty of fluids from the list of approved liquids. Liquids such as ginger ale,
chicken broth, lemonade, and apple juice are usually the most appealing.
• Have him station himself near the bathroom. Make a little nest, with the television, books and
magazines, bowel preparation cocktail, other approved liquids, pillows, and blankets nearby. The
urge to defecate will strike suddenly and without much warning.
• Try to make sure he does not have to share the bathroom with others during this time.
