Research the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Describe what it is and detail the arguments for and against NAFTA.

What will be an ideal response?

NAFTA is the three-way trade agreement between the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The agreement became law on January 1, 1994. Each country has had advocates and critics of NAFTA. The proponents of NAFTA felt that opening up trade among the three countries would benefi t industries and workers in each country. While low-skilled jobs may movefrom the United States and Canad to Mexico, the creation and sale of goods would result in new higher paying jobs in the United States and
Canada. Critics of NAFTA argued that net eff ect would be to drive jobs to Mexico without suffi cient job growth in the United States and Canada. Additionally, detractors were concerned that lax environmental regulation would result in increased pollution and environmental impact in Mexico.
Though the agreement specifi ed environmental standards, critics argued that these would be diffi cult, if not impossible, to enforce. The results ofNAFTA have been mixed. Positive and negative outcomes have occurred, and two sides remain for and against NAFTA, even making it an issue in the 2008 U.S. Presidential election.
