Compare the roles of prolactin and oxytocin in parental behavior.
What will be an ideal response?
A variety of parental behaviors are influenced by prolactin or oxytocin. For example, nest building is affected by prolactin. Prolactin is high after birth, and elevation of this particular hormone appears to be related to maternal behavior. In addition, oxytocin facilitates pair bonding and plays a role in bonds between mother and child. If rats were given oxytocin, they would become maternal. If oxytocin were blocked, they would ignore their pups. Research also suggests these hormones play a role in paternal behavior as well. Studies have found that fathers with higher prolactin had stronger feelings of sympathy when they heard their babies cry. Higher levels of oxytocin were also associated with coordinated emotional behavior between father and baby.
