Explain the controversy surrounding cochlear implants
What will be an ideal response?
Explain the controversy surrounding cochlear implants.
Answers will vary but the following points should be present and developed:
• the view of the Deaf culture that it's genocide-the belief is that "people who have never heard do not experience hearing loss as a loss;" deafness is viewed as a cultural difference and not a deficit
• if Deaf people do not view it as an impairment, it's offensive and affront to their culture that hearing people want to "fix" it
? cochlear implants in children is particularly disturbing from the Deaf culture's viewpoint as those children do not get to choose
? it's difficult for hearing people to understand the controversy because hearing people generally see hearing loss as an impairment to be corrected
