It has often been said that the next dominant animals on land, after a hypothetical demise of all mammals, would be insects. Why so?

Answers will vary. Insects are so diverse and adapted to such a wide variety of habitats it is impossible to believe that at least some would not thrive. The insect adaptations of an exoskeleton, jointed appendages, and wings have enabled this group to be highly adaptable and successful.
