Describe the mechanism of action of the sedative-hypnotic agents in the human brain.

What will be an ideal response?

The receptors of sedative-hypnotic agent benzodiazepine are always near receptors for the amino acid neurotransmitter gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA). When benzodiazepines (and their nonbenzodiazepine cousins) bind to their receptor site, they enhance the normally inhibitory effects of GABA on its receptors. The barbiturates act at a separate binding site nearby. The picture emerges of a GABA receptor complex, which includes the barbiturate binding site and the benzodiazepine receptor.
