One of the reasons why virtual servers are appealing is that they offer the ability to reduce the number of servers needed to run a business. Over time, businesses and organizations continue to add servers for new functions. For example, a business might add a Web server (or servers), additional DNS servers, and servers for new databases and software. The sprawl of servers has become known as a server farm because servers seem to sprout up everywhere. Server proliferation requires more work in maintaining servers, resulting in the need to hire additional people to manage them. Locating space to store the servers is also a problem. As the number of servers grows, space can run out in an operations center or server room and it becomes necessary to invest in more space. Additional expenses are incurred for physical security, air conditioning, and heating to keep the servers in a secure, controlled environment. Further, the cost of electricity and fuel is rising, and more server hardware translates into higher electric, heating, and cooling bills.
The use of virtual servers enables an organization to consolidate servers into fewer physical computers, generally cutting the number of computers by two-thirds, three-fourths, and more depending on the hardware and applications. Server consolidation means that significant money can be saved on personnel, space, security, and energy costs.
