Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using the percentage of maximum heart rate reserve to calculate target heart rates, compared with using the percentage of maximum heart rate
The advantage to using heart rate reserve is that it takes into account resting heart rate, which varies between individuals. For example, when using the maximum heart rate method, two individuals with different resting heart rates would be prescribed the same target heart rate. However, the person with the lower resting heart rate would need to increase his heart rate by more beats per minute to reach the same target heart rate of the individual with a higher resting heart rate. The disadvantage with using heart rate reserve is the challenge of measuring a true resting heart rate.
