Briefly explain why Helmut Haberl's research group in Austria selected to measure the percent harvest of net primary productivity as an indicator of human population growth on the surrounding environment
What will be an ideal response?
Net primary productivity is, in basic terms, the amount of biomass that a community or ecosystem produces, the net amount of energy stored as a result of photosynthesis. This biomass is the energy support of all the food webs in these systems as well as for humans and is also a large part of the physical habitat in which other species live. To the extent that we use biomass or prevent it from growing, human activities affect what is available to other species as food and habitat. Overharvesting will clearly have consequences for sustainable ecosystem services and biodiversity.
