What do West and Zimmerman (1987) mean by "doing gender?"

What will be an ideal response?

Varies. Students must discuss that "doing gender" refers to the performance of being male or female. A female may "do" her gender by wearing makeup, dresses, and high heels. A male may "do" his gender by participating in masculine activities. People "do" their gender every day because their gender performance has become habitus. If one fails to do their gender, they are often stigmatized for failing to meet society's expectations. People learn to do gender from a young age. This is very similar to learning cultural expectations.
