The west coast of Latin America lies along a major tectonic plate. The Andes Mountains are a product of seismic activity, and both earthquakes and volcanic activity are common throughout that region. The hazards also come with advantages, such as excellent volcanic soils which has allowed multiple civilizations to thrive.
