Individual judgment can be tainted by bias, erroneous or irrational thinking, and plain ill will. This can result in arbitrary and discriminatory decision making, and, as a result, distrust by the population. It also leads to unfairness and injustice. Many of the rules in the formal criminal justice system are designed to keep its employees from substituting their own judgment for that of the general population, as expressed by the law.
