How do culture, gender, and technology influence self-disclosure? Include examples in your
explanations.
What will be an ideal response?
People in open cultures, such as Americans, talk candidly about personal issues and are
less concerned with saving face. They also tend to be more individualistic and low-context.
Women are more likely than men to use self-disclosure for building relationships, and they are
likely to self-disclose and become emotionally vulnerable. Self-disclosure in computer-mediated
communication (CMC) is used to reduce uncertainty and is more intimate. It can lead to
confidence in face-to-face communication as well as long-term relationships.
