Describe the two roles of shielding gas in plasma arc cutting.
What will be an ideal response?
The gas that passes between the shield cap and the cutting nozzle acts as the shielding gas, cooling the cutting nozzle so it does not overheat. This same compressed gas, when passed inside the gun between the electrode and the cutting heat, swirls around the electrode and becomes superheated to 60,000°F, which ionizes the gas to become plasma.
