The most common causes of cirrhosis are alcoholic liver disease and chronic hepatitis caused by HBV or HCV infections. The less common causes include an episode of severe liver necrosis, such as after an attack of severe viral hepatitis; various other drugs and chemicals that damage liver cells; various genetic diseases; and longstanding bile duct obstruction, which causes a special type of cirrhosis called biliary cirrhosis.
