In an initial session with a couple and their teenage daughter, the father summarizes the pressing concerns. While he is talking, the daughter remains silent. Describe how you would respond in this situation
What will be an ideal response?
In the given situation, it is important to ensure that the daughter's viewpoint is elicited by the social worker. The goal of bringing the family together is to identify the problem at hand by eliciting the viewpoints of the various family members. In interpreting a family member who is reluctant, unwilling, or inactive in the family session, you should be sensitive to such factors as an individual's personality and cultural norms. Some individuals may prefer to observe processes before they engage or participate.
Culture may influence such expressions as feelings, so a family member may be baffled by related questions. Personality or culture aside, certain family members will continue to have strong reservations. You can address their reluctance in the initial session by asking them one of the following questions and addressing their responses:
What, if anything, would make you feel better about participating?
Having heard the concerns of other family members, on a scale of 1 to 10, which one would you rate as highest or lowest priority?
Given your concerns, are you willing to stay for the remainder of the session and decide at the conclusion whether to continue?
The intent of these questions shows willingness on your part to negotiate the terms under which a family member participates and also acknowledges his or her right of choice.
