Explain the purpose of the General and Supplementary Conditions to the Contract.

What will be an ideal response?

The General Conditions of the Contract relate to a construction project as rules would relate to a football game. These conditions establish the relationship between the owner, its agents (architects and engineers), and the contractor and define the relationship and responsibilities of the parties to maintain this relationship. The conditions also establish the terms of the legal contract between the owner and contractor.

The Supplementary Conditions to the Contract are additional provisions or modifications to the General Conditions of the Contract that are specific to the particular owner and project. Together, these form the Conditions of the Contract. All actions of the owner and contractor can be judged for compliance to the Conditions of the Contract. The General Conditions and the Supplementary Conditions of the Contract are the base of reference for determining responsibility- and resulting liability- for actions by either party during the project period.
