Explain how wind turbines can be protected from lightning strikes.
What will be an ideal response?
The tower must have a lightning arrest that is solidly grounded to earth. This equipment provides a well-defined, low-resistance path from the wind turbine and tower to the ground to protect it against current surges from lightning strikes or equipment malfunction. Surge protectors installed in the wind turbine’s charge circuit can also give additional protection to the system in the event that it is struck by lightning. Nothing can prevent damage from a direct hit by lightning, but a surge protector can minimize the effect of high voltage current running from the turbine to the battery stack and destroying the batteries with an overcharge.
