This writing approach uses paragraphs of one to two sentences each. In writing for news publications, you strive to demonstrate objectivity. News writers should not take sides on an issue or offer personal opinions in their pieces. This means you need sources to do the hard work for you. Quotes allow the people in your story, your advertisement, or your media release to speak directly to the audience in their own words. Direct quotes are taken from the source’s mouth, word for word, and placed into your writing. Indirect quotes, which are often referred to as paraphrase, take all the information you want to use from a source and boil it down to the basics for your readers.
