Kai Erikson was hired after a flood ravaged the community of Buffalo Creek in West Virginia, leaving destruction and death in its wake. He was hired by a law firm to estimate the extent of the destruction in the situation. Erikson spent five years studying the scenario, with the hope that the particular case would be generalizable to other scenarios. Erikson conceptualized the flood as a case of human disaster comparable to earthquakes, air raids, and other catastrophes. The scenario showed a coherent but threatened culture shocked by a massive disruption in its way of life struggling to regain a sense of meaning. This work was used as a touchstone for New Yorkers recovering from 9/11. There was great consistency among the disaster coping scenarios despite the fact that they occurred as a result of two very different events in very different settings.
