Describe the four strokes of the internal combustion engine.
What will be an ideal response?
During the first stroke, the intake valve opens and allows the air/fuel mixture into the cylinder as the piston moves down. At the end of the intake stroke, the intake valve closes and the piston begins moving upward, compressing the air/fuel mixture. Once the piston is near top-dead-center the air/fuel mixture ignites, forcing the piston down; this is the power stroke. At the end of the power stroke, the piston moves upward and the exhaust valve opens, allowing the exhaust gases to leave the cylinder.
