Antisense drugs help us fight some types of cancer and viral diseases. The drugs consist of short mRNA strands that are complementary in base sequence to mRNAs linked to the diseases. Speculate on how antisense drugs work

What will be an ideal response?

Antisense drugs interact with their intended target based on information in the genetic code. Overproduction or abnormal production of proteins is implicated in cancer and many diseases. Antisense drugs will stop the translation of these proteins by preventing the mRNA coding for them from reaching the ribosome. They do this by binding (hybridizing) to the target mRNA, which is degraded by enzymes and thus not translated.

You have taken E. coli strain A which has its own plasmids, and mixed it with E. coli B strain without plasmids.  E. coli B cells now have plasmids but, in addition, they also carry some genes from E. coli A strain.  What has happened is

A. the cells of E. coli A were Hfr cells. B. vertical transmission of DNA has occurred. C. the E. coli B cells have become mutants of the original culture. D. an example of transformation.

After considerable effort, you are able to collect and analyze DNA from the winged animal. You obtain the nucleotide sequence of the cytochrome c oxidase gene. When you compare this sequence to the sequence of the same gene in a bat, a rodent, a shrew,

and a human, you find the following numbers of differences: winged animal-bat 11 differences winged animal-rodent 14 differences winged animal-shrew 15 differences winged animal-human 9 differences Which hypothesis does this data support? A) Of the mammals tested, the winged animal is probably most closely related to humans. B) Of the mammals tested, the winged animal is probably most closely related to shrews. C) The winged animal is probably most closely related to bats, because bats also have wings. D) Of the mammals tested, the winged animal is probably most closely related to rodents.
