Using either a real or a hypothetical relationship, trace the five stages of coming together, using examples of the communication that occurs at each stage
What will be an ideal response?
Answers will vary but should reflect the following:
• Initiating: The starting point for relational development, one must "break the ice" and let him-/herself be known to the other person.
• Experimenting: Focuses on both parties sharing more about themselves, often through small talk. The goal is finding out whether the two people want to continue the relationship. The stage can vary in terms of length and intimacy.
• Intensifying: The parties are really getting to know one another, so more time is spent together, activities are shared, and thoughts and ideas are communicated. There is newness and excitement in the relationship as new information is discovered. However, problems can also surface when the newness wears off or factors outside of the relationship post problems, such as other people, conflicting schedules, etc.
• Integrating: The parties are perceived to be a couple as they share resources. Collective pronouns ("we", "they") are often used to refer to the couple. Some couples may consider cohabiting.
• Bonding: This is the pinnacle of coming together and usually includes a public capstone event, such as a marriage ceremony and/or exchanging rings. For friendships, this is often marked by statements, such as "friends for life", etc.
