Explain the “figure-ground principle.”
What will be an ideal response?
One strategy for meaningful organization of impressions is to categorize a stimulus according to the figure-ground principle. What we choose to focus on becomes the figure, and the rest of what we experience is the ground. We are able to alternate the figure and ground of what we perceive. The ocean may be the figure at one moment and the sky may be the ground, but the sky may become the figure and the ocean may become the ground when we alternate our focus.
