What will be an ideal response?
The major approaches to teaching science include the textbook approach, hands-on or activities programs that emphasize inquiry in science, and integrated curriculum that illustrates the ways in which science can be tied to other subject areas.
Textbook approach—Teachers usually use commercially published textbooks. A textbook may be the primary vehicle of the science program, with students regularly reading and consulting it. Textbook approach is usually accompanied with class lectures, discussions, regular tests, activities for students to perform and laboratory materials. This technique is frequently used by science teachers.
Hands-on/activity-based approach—Hands-on approaches to science stress the use of process and inquiry skills. They underscore doing and discovery. A common inquiry model is the five E’s: engagement, exploration, explanation, elaboration, and evaluation. This approach promotes the use of inquiry skills such as: Observation, measurement, classification, communication, data collection, organization, and graphing, inference, prediction, data interpretation, formulation of hypotheses, and experimentation.
Integrated curriculum—This curricular option focuses on working other subjects and skills areas into science. Some schools have fashioned entire basic skills programs around the theme of science. Interdisciplinary themes are good ways to develop big ideas.
