Explain the risk of excessive folate consumption
What will be an ideal response?
Consuming too much folic acid–more than 1,000 micrograms on a daily basis--either through supplements or fortified foods, can be harmful for individuals who are deficient in vitamin B12 because excessive folate masks the symptoms of B12 deficiency–macrocytic anemia--abnormally large and immature red blood cells. Because of their diminished oxygen-carrying capacity, persons with these red blood cells feel tired, weak, and irritable and they experience shortness of breath. Because folate needs vitamin B12 to participate in cell division and produce healthy red blood cells, a deficiency of either vitamin can lead to macrocytic anemia.
