Briefly discuss what esophageal varices are and how they are related to liver disease

What will be an ideal response?

Varices are swollen, protruding veins in the mucosa of the lower esophagus. Liver disease causes the blood to back up in the portal vein. The blood then goes through the gastroesophageal veins as another route to return to the heart. However, these veins cannot handle this and eventually become engorged from the blood flow and pressure.
