Your classmate Sue likes to go to parties and drink, sometimes up to six drinks a night, but only on the weekends

You and she have discussed her drinking many times and she claims there isn't a problem because she isn't someone who drinks every day like an alcoholic. How would you classify her drinking and what are the potential consequences of this type of drinking?

What will be an ideal response?

ANS: Sue is a binge drinker because her consumption of alcohol is more than four drinks in a very short period of time. She is more likely to miss classes, have hangovers, and experience unintentional injuries from falling, motor vehicle accidents, and drowning, and may even die. Binge drinking is associated with hypertension, heart attack, sexually transmitted disease, suicide, homicide, and child abuse. Binge drinkers engage in more unplanned sexual activity. Blackouts and alcohol poisoning are also potential consequences of binge drinking.
